LAUNCH - CIMARRON - 09/04/2019

After Wilder Mann and Yokainoshima, Artazart has the honor to welcome Charles Fréger for the launch of his latest book published by Actes Sud, entitled Cimarron.

The third part of a series begun in 2014, this new work deals with the legacy of slavery at non-standard gatherings: masquerades, referring to sometimes satirical balls, gathering people in disguise and masks. Sacred figures, devils, subversive and naturally reinvented clows.

Through this series that spans 14 countries, from the southern United States to Brazil through the Caribbean, the artist draws up a non-exhaustive inventory of this tradition, practiced mainly by the descendants of African slaves.

When the notion of cultural appropriation reappears in the news, it is often with a critical or pejorative note. This is what Charles Fréger questions.
