SIGNING SESSION WITH BRUCE GILDEN - "CHERRY BLOSSOM" - TUESDAY 9 NOVEMBER 2021
Living legend of street photography, member of the Magnum agency since 1998, Bruce Gilden takes advantage of his visit to Paris Photo in November to stop by the Canal Saint Martin!
On this occasion, you will be able to meet his two latest books published by Atelier EXB, Lost and Found (2019) and Cherry Blossom (2021). As always, a fascination for everyday life in the street and the complex movement that this implies.
For Cherry BlossomFor Cherry Blossom, Bruce Gilden set out at dawn to explore an unfamiliar Japan, that of people on the fringes of the major Japanese metropolises, particularly in the dangerous district of Sanya, where Yakuza gangsters rub shoulders with bosozukus, teenage motorcycle gangs: "I thought I had landed in another world, a kind of Japanese version of the Court of Miracles (...)".
"In Japan everything is very harmonious on the surface and I tried from the start to go beyond the images that jump out at you. The lady with the cherry blossom kimono (which gives the title to this book) is nothing extraordinary in itself, but the fact that she is eating fried chicken in a traditional outfit gives a new dimension to the image. Simply because you don't expect it." Bruce Gilden
Bruce Gilden's work has been exhibited around the world and is included in numerous collections such as MoMA, Victoria & Albert Museum, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and the Getty Museum. In 2016, his work was featured in a group exhibition at the Barbican Art Museum in London, and in 2019 at Pier 24 Photography in San Francisco. |
