MEETING - SIGNING WITH MARCHAND & MEFFRE - "MOVIE THEATERS" - THURSDAY DECEMBER 16, 2021
Meeting - signing session from 6:30 to 8:30 pm
There are movie palacesin every American city, grandiose ones built during the heyday of the entertainment industry. These theaters are now abandoned, empty, decaying, or repurposed.
Since 2005, renowned photography duo Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre have traveled the United States to visit these early 20th century relics. In hundreds of colorful images, they have captured the rich architectural diversity of the theaters' exteriors, from Renaissance to Gothic Revival, Art Nouveau to Bauhaus, and Neo-Byzantine to Jugendstil.
They also went inside to capture the commonalities of a dying culture - crumbling plaster, rows of broken velvet seats, peeling paint, faulty equipment, and abandoned concession stands - as well as their transformation into bingo halls, warehouses, fitness centers, flea markets, parking lots, and grocery stores.
Presented here in a beautiful oversized format, printed with premium inks and selective varnish, this illustrated eulogy of the American movie palace is sure to become a reference.
