Born in New York in 1944, Joel Sternfeld is a major player in color photography, whose work has won many awards. This reissue of American Prospects, one of his iconic, oft-reissued books, returns to the format of the original 1987 edition. All the now-classic images are included, as well as a group of never-before-published photographs.

Funny to tragic, Joel Sternfeld’s photographs highlight the inequalities of living conditions in Reagan’s America, but also the widening gap between man eand his environment. Landslides and wildfires remain muted signs as everyone rushes to the 1979 Colombia shuttle landing in San Antonio or a miss bikini contest in Florida.

The influence of American Prospect on the photography of the second half of the 19th century lies as much in the melancholy portraits as in the poetic landscapes of America’s great outdoors, through which Joel Sternfeld portrays the human condition in 1980s America.
