FRANCE 1987 - Mark Steinmetz

This collection of previously unpublished photographs by Mark Steinmetz, made some 35 years ago during an extended stay in the south of France, provides a welcome glimpse into his early years as an artist. It includes over 60 two-color photographs on Kasadaka Japanese art paper and bound in burgundy linen.

“In the summer of 1987, I was 26, a few years out of graduate school and living in an abandoned apartment outside Boston. I’d been offered an artist residency in the south of France, and so, in August, I flew to Paris. I spent a few weeks with close family friends in a top-floor apartment on Avenue de Wagram. I had breakfast and ran around Paris photographing all day. Later in the year, I headed south to begin my artist residency at the Camargo Foundation in Cassis, a seaside town not far from Marseille. I made day trips from Cassis to Arles, Aix, Marseille and Nice, and was able to process my film in the simple darkroom provided. The pace of daily life was more relaxed. People were worried in 1987, but not as much as today.”
