Thirty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, what do we know about East German photography? The fruit of several years’ research by Sonia Voss in Berlin and in several cities of the former GDR, this book presents the work of 16 photographers who are still rarely shown outside their own country, and who worked in the decade leading up to the fall of the Wall.

The GDR was in the throes of economic decline, and its citizens were losing their ideological support. Boredom and the desire to be elsewhere, impatience – sometimes melancholy, sometimes furious – engendered by repression, standardization and scarcity characterize the youth of this period. Existential and artistic strategies were as diverse as the creators who lived through the period: confrontation with social taboos, inner withdrawal and introspection, escape into dreams, reinvention of the self through cross-dressing and staging… The body is often at the center of their experiments, drawing on hybridization and performance art to express their thirst for subversion and speed, or observing their faces and bodies as if to avoid their disintegration. Women occupy a prominent place in this book, reflecting the specificity of their social status in East Germany.
