A catalog for an exhibition at C/o Berlin (spring 2023) and then at Fundacion Mapfre (2024), Mystery of the Ordinary captures the full breadth of Eggleston's evolution: from the early black-and-white works of the late 1950s, with his exploration of new themes and framings, to some of his most iconic color images. Although the first color film arrived on the market in 1935, it was reserved for the world of advertising and, until the 1980s, was still considered commercial and vulgar. Despite this, along with Saul Leiter, Evelyn Hofer, and Stephen Shore, Eggleston was one of the first photographers to recognize the distinctive power of color and its unique ability to create images that reinvent the everyday, as early as the 1960s. This exhibition is an account of this upheaval, which was partly brought about by William Eggleston.
