Photographer Harry Gruyaert, born in Antwerp in 1941, invites us on a sort of vast urban tracking shot. Whether he takes us to Tokyo, Brussels, New York, Paris, Ouarzazate, Old Delhi or Moscow, it doesn’t really matter. What drives him to press the shutter isn’t so much the subject as the way it takes shape under the photographer’s eye: intense, pulsating colours, sharp outlines of shadows and urban geometries punctuate the frame like a jazz phrase – call and response. Harry Gruyaert’s magnetic music plays out on the tarmac, where vibrations and emotions converse.
Harry Gruyaert argues that colour is the very essence of emotion in photography… This book offers a sensory and playful immersion into his work, through a series of open-ended questions that encourage young readers to observe the characters, the colours (noting the red elements in particular) and repetitive or contrasting shapes, so that they can gradually come to grasp the composition as a whole. In doing so, they will learn not only to capture what is happening within the image, but also to discover, beyond the frame captured by the photographer’s eye, a genuine burst of life: a story – or even stories – still unfolding, which they are free to imagine.
