LAUNCH – CIMARRON

After Wilder Mann and Yokainoshima, Artazart is honored to welcome Charles Fréger for the launch of his latest book published by Actes Sud, entitled Cimarron.

The third part of a series begun in 2014, this new work deals with the legacy of slavery at unusual gatherings: masquerades, sometimes satirical balls attended by people in disguise and masks. Sacred figures, devils, subversive and naturally reinvented clows.

In this series spanning 14 countries, from the southern United States to Brazil and the Caribbean, the artist draws up a non-exhaustive inventory of this tradition, practiced mainly by the descendants of African slaves.

When the notion of cultural appropriation reappears in the news, it’s often with a critical or pejorative note. This is what Charles Fréger questions.
