A professional photographer based in Paris, Jean-Baptiste Pellerin has been distributing his work under the name #BACKTOTHE STREET for ten years.

His portraits, taken in the street as he meets people, are intended to go back out into the street. His photos, in the unchanging 10×15 cm format, are glued onto tiles and protected by a glass plate, before Jean-Baptiste pastes them onto the walls of the towns he visits. His wild installations turn cities into playgrounds and open-air exhibition spaces. To date, he has created more than 4,000 installations around the world, in cities such as Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Arles, Toulouse, London, New York, Lisbon, Bombay and Tokyo.

This book brings together this gallery of portraits taken on the spot, against the natural backdrop of the streets of Paris. As he criss-crosses the city, Jean-Baptiste Pellerin catches a smile, a silhouette, and asks if someone would like to pose here, in the middle of the street or a little further on. These snapshots of Parisian life, born of encounters with people of all ages and from all walks of life, are an exceptional record of our times and of the diversity of the city’s inhabitants and those who are just passing through.
