The cities, the street, the other… // Sabine Weiss

“Learning to see the simplest details, but which express everything and illuminate the essential.” Sabine Weiss.

A member of the Rapho agency alongside Robert Doisneau, Willy Ronis and Janine Niépce, Sabine Weiss is the last representative of the great movement of so-called humanist photography. A privileged witness of her time, she nevertheless remained far removed from the great photo-reportages, conflicts and political events that marked history, devoting herself to the street and its inhabitants.

This book, which brings together her work from 1946 to 1964, and accompanies the eponymous exhibition at the Centre Pompidou, reveals her gentle, understanding view of the individual in the big city. “Photography is everything you see… In the street, you photograph for pleasure” (interview with Karolina Ziebinska-Lewandowska). This is how Sabine Weiss describes her art, as she photographs, in her moments of freedom, her everyday life.

“SABINE WEISS Les villes, la rue et l’autre” Exhibition at the Galerie de photographies du Centre Pompidou from June 20 to October 15, 2018 and exceptional meeting at Artazart, on Tuesday, September 18 from 7:00 pm.
