RENCONTRE – DÉDICACE AVEC MARCHAND & MEFFRE – ” MOVIE THEATERS ” – JEUDI 16 DÉCEMBRE 2021

Meeting – book signing from 6:30pm to 8:30pm

There are them in every American city, grandiose “movie palacess” built during the heyday of the entertainment industry. Today, these cinemas are abandoned, empty, decaying, or repurposed.

Since 2005, renowned photography duo Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre have been traveling the United States to visit these early 20th-century relics. In hundreds of vibrantly colored images, they have captured the rich architectural diversity of theater exteriors, from neo-renaissance to neo-Gothic, art nouveau to Bauhaus, and neo-Byzantine to Jugendstill.

They also went inside to capture the commonalities of a dying culture – crumbling plaster, rows of broken seats in crushed velvet, peeling paint, faulty equipment and abandoned concession stands – as well as their transformation into bingo halls, warehouses, fitness centers, flea markets, parking lots and grocery stores.

Presented here in a beautiful oversized format, printed with premium inks and selective varnish, this illustrated eulogy of the American movie palace is sure to become a reference.
