Photographer Harry Gruyaert, born in Antwerp in 1941, invites us on a sort of vast urban tracking shot. Whether he takes us to Tokyo, Brussels, New York, Paris, Ouarzazate, Old Delhi or Moscow, it matters little. What drives the shutter release is not so much the subject as the way it takes shape under the photographer’s eye: intense, pulsating colours, sharp-edged shadows and urban geometries punctuate the frame like a jazz phrase – call and response. Harry Gruyaert’s magnetic music plays out on the tarmac, where vibrations and emotions converse.
