CROSS ROAD BLUES

Cross Road Blues presents a selection of 33 photographs from UK-based photographer Oli Kellett’s iconic series of the same name.

Kellett began this project in 2016 during a visit to Los Angeles, a time when the United States was at a political crossroads. The series evolves naturally from there, taking on a more universal meaning as Kellett continues his work in other countries, from Spain to Japan, via Brazil and Mexico. Kellett creates compelling photographs of ordinary people waiting at crossroads, providing us with a powerful contemporary metaphor.” We live in an era of fake news, political polarization and algorithmic echo chambers,” explains Oli Kellett. “Our experience of the world is fragmented as we live multiple identities, on and offline. But the hubs are a democratic place; we all have to wait.”

Kellett’s admiration for American painter Edward Hopper, who reflected American life in silent spaces and melancholy moments, shines through in his masterful use of natural light and subtle composition, lending cinematic quality to these scenes.
