Bruce Gilden discovered Haiti in 1984, during the famous Mardi Gras festivities. Fascinated by the country, he visited many times until 1995, and again after the 2010 earthquake. Gilden observes an impoverished territory, prey to numerous natural disasters, but rich in unique energy. As usual, the photographer veers off the beaten track. He criss-crosses the island and meets its inhabitants in situations that few would be prepared to see. Like his photography, Gilden gets as close as possible to his subjects, and his photographs exude a sense of tension and an almost surreal atmosphere.

With this series, first published in 1996, and supplemented in this book by almost half of previously unpublished images, Bruce Gilden completes his photographic trilogy; after Lost and Found (2019) and Cherry Blossom (2021), Haiti closes the journey.
An essay by Haitian author Louis-Philippe Dalembert, taking a literary and poetic look at his work, completes this immersion in Creole country.
