LES OISEAUX – Jochen Gerner

Oiseaux is an aviary bringing together nearly 200 drawings by Jochen Gerner between February 2019 and September 2020. Each of these birds was drawn with pigmented Indian ink felt pens on small-format school notebooks from China and India, on which lines and squares of different sizes appear.

This series of drawings is a graphic experiment to explore the potential of the screen, the superimposition of strokes, and the association of a reduced number of colors in the creation of plumage. By mixing real and dreamed-up birds, this inventory questions the links between imagination and reality in our daily lives, and teaches us that the fantastic often nestles in the reality of everyday life.

As part of this graphic research, Jochen Gerner drew inspiration from the work of 18th-century illustrators such as François-Nicolas Martinet, who used to depict birds in profile, giving them a noble, stiff character, contrasting with the strength and luminosity of the colors.
