French film-maker and United 24 ambassador Michel Hazanavicius went to the front in Ukraine in November 2023, at the request of Ukrainian friends. He brought back first-hand accounts from combatants, both men and women, which he illustrated with sketches made on the spot.
“In November 2023, I spent a few days at the front in Ukraine.
I went there because some Ukrainian friends suggested I meet the people who are fighting.
Most of them are like you and me, they’re not career soldiers and would never have imagined finding themselves in a trench under a shell.
I set off with pen and paper, and came back with this notebook.
At the time of publication, I don’t know who among them is still alive. But I do know what we owe them.
