Witkin’s early work features the stars of a freak show: his friendships in marginal circles determine his visual universe and shooting style. His work favors interior photography and shows unusual models, engaged in the course of his encounters, which he sees as nothing more than a quest for the infinite… Whether an assertive reinterpretation of the classics or a subtle impregnation, reference to the great pictorial or sculptural works is a constant. Whether focusing on portraits, nudes or still lifes, his work is based on two founding themes: Eros and the Sacred.
