FERÆ – Aurélie Scouarnec

In early 2020, Aurélie Scouarnec began regular visits to a wildlife care center. In this place, caregivers rescue all species of birds and mammals without distinction. The photographer captures their gestures, which are repeated and become ritualized: they feed, re-educate, bandage and clean. Contact with injured bodies opens up the space for a face-to-face encounter with animal otherness, where distances are recomposed. This time of care overturns relational boundaries with the non-domestic animal, creating an unusual closeness. Hands and fingers merge with fur and feathers in Aurélie Scouarnec’s photos. At a time when wild species and their habitats are steadily shrinking, these caregivers are trying to act on behalf of wildlife, as an attempt to repair our ties with the living.
