Imagine an old hotel, nestled in a mountain hamlet that has been deserted in winter since the 1960s, and whose access road closes on 15 December and reopens on 15 March. Imagine a couple who decide to live there all year round and experience the wonders and fears of a 3-month winter, at an altitude of 1,600 metres, cut off from the world by snow and avalanches.
The path taken by Jean-Marc Rochette is made up of breaks. On two previous occasions, he gave up comics to pursue a freer style of drawing and to devote himself to painting. With Au cœur de l’hiver, Jean-Marc Rochette shares with us his experience of living in the Écrins massif, and offers us a wonderful intimate adventure story. While this novel is the story of a retreat, of two people living alone in an Alpine valley, and of abandonment, it is above all the chronicle of a rebirth. Jean-Marc Rochette tells us how he rediscovered the fullness of the blue, using words of raw beauty.
